Guide
How long does external wall insulation take?
A typical semi-detached house takes about 2–4 weeks for external wall insulation, from scaffold going up to it coming down. Most render systems need temperatures of about 5°C and rising, with no frost or rain during curing, so weather can extend the programme.
A typical programme
- Days 1–2 — scaffold, protection, removing downpipes and fittings
- Days 2–5 — preparation, starter track, boards and fixings
- Days 5–9 — beads, base coat and mesh, cills and details
- Days 9–12 — primer and finish render, refitting services
- Final days — snagging, cleaning, scaffold down
Weather limits
Render manufacturers set minimum temperatures — typically 5°C and rising — and no rain or frost during application and curing. Winter work is possible in good spells but programmes allow for lost days.
How to prepare
Let neighbours know about scaffold, clear space along walls, and arrange for any gas meter moves or flue extensions with the relevant engineer if the quote says they're needed.
Questions
Can I stay at home?
Yes — the work is outside.
Will I have access to my windows?
Mostly, though some days windows need to stay shut while work happens nearby.
Does it need two dry weeks?
Not continuously, but finish coats need dry spells.
