Render finishes
Monocouche render
Monocouche render is a one-coat, through-coloured cement-based render applied 15–20mm thick, usually by spray, and scraped back to an even textured finish. It's widely used on new blockwork, extensions and sound masonry.
- Applied in one or two passes, often by spray machine
- Through-coloured, with a scraped texture
- Good for new blockwork and extensions
- Beads and movement joints control cracking
- Not the finish used over insulation boards
- Lower cost per m² than thin-coat systems on suitable walls

Where is monocouche used?
Monocouche is best on new or sound blockwork and brickwork with consistent suction — extensions, new builds and garden walls. It's applied thicker than thin-coat renders and scraped once firm to reveal the texture.

- Not used
Can monocouche go over insulation?
No — insulation systems use a mesh-reinforced base coat and a thin-coat finish instead. If you want insulation as well as a new finish, see insulated render.
Why does monocouche sometimes look patchy?
Colour variation (often called shading) can appear if it's applied in poor weather, on walls with uneven suction, or in sections on different days. Working an elevation in one go in suitable conditions keeps the colour even.

Monocouche render: questions
How long does monocouche last?
Typically 20 years or more on a suitable wall, depending on exposure and detailing.
Does monocouche need painting?
No — it's through-coloured. Cleaning every few years keeps it looking fresh.
Is monocouche waterproof?
It's water-resistant and sheds rain, while still allowing some vapour through.
Monocouche or silicone for an extension?
Both work on new blockwork. Silicone over a base coat costs a little more but tends to stay cleaner.
