Render finishes
Insulated render systems
Insulated render is external wall insulation with a render finish — insulation board, reinforced base coat and a decorative render tested together as one system. It gives the look of a modern rendered house while bringing the wall up to current insulation standards.
- One system: board, adhesive, fixings, mesh, primer and render
- Through-coloured finishes in hundreds of shades
- Contrasting colours for bands, plinths and features
- Combines a new look with lower heat loss
- Suitable for houses, extensions and whole buildings
- Designed and tested by the system manufacturer

Is insulated render the same as EWI?
Yes — insulated render is the everyday name for a rendered EWI system. Some people also use it for thin thermal renders containing aerogel or cork, which are applied 20–40mm thick on heritage walls. They insulate far less than board systems, so we treat them as a specialist option.
Typical build-up
- Board options
- EPS, mineral wool, wood fibre, phenolic
- Finish
- Thin-coat silicone, acrylic or mineral render
- Grain size
- Typically 1–2mm
- Colours
- Through-coloured; contrasting details possible
- Typical U-value
- ≈0.25–0.30 W/m²K on solid brick
Can I choose two colours?
Yes. Many owners pick a main colour with a contrasting plinth, entrance surround or bay. Feature bands and recessed details can be formed in the insulation before rendering.
What texture will it have?
Thin-coat renders come in grain sizes, typically 1–2mm. A 1.5mm grain is a common middle ground: fine enough to look smooth from the street, coarse enough to hide minor imperfections.

Insulated render systems: questions
How long does insulated render last?
Typically 25–30 years or more with maintenance; the manufacturer's documentation sets the service life for the specific system.
Does insulated render need painting?
Through-coloured silicone and acrylic renders don't need painting. Mineral renders are usually painted with a compatible masonry paint.
Can insulated render be applied in winter?
Only in suitable weather — typically above 5°C and rising, with no frost or rain during curing. Winter programmes allow for lost days.
Will my house look different?
Yes, if it was brick or pebble dash. If you want to keep a brick look, a brick-slip finish over the insulation is an option.
