What we look for in Cambridge

We cover Cambridge and nearby Newmarket, Huntingdon and Haverhill. It's roughly 30 miles from Cambridge to Peterborough, the largest town in Cambridgeshire. The East of England has a mix of post-war estates, inter-war semis and older solid brick and flint cottages, with some system-built council homes on post-war estates.

Much of Cambridgeshire sits in the lower wind-driven rain exposure bands, which keeps the choice of finishes wide — though hilltop, coastal and exposed gable walls can still need a tougher specification, so we check the actual site.

For commercial premises in Cambridge, we programme the work around opening hours so the building can keep trading.

Permissions in England

For a house in Cambridge, external insulation or render is often permitted development if it looks similar to the existing walls; conservation areas, flats, commercial buildings and listed buildings need permission or consent, so we check your address first.

Insulating or re-rendering more than half of a wall's area brings in Part L of the Building Regulations, so building control is notified and the wall is upgraded to about 0.30 W/m²K where practical.

On residential buildings with a storey 11 metres or more above ground, guidance points to non-combustible external wall materials, and combustible materials are banned in relevant buildings 18 metres and over, so we specify mineral wool systems there.

How is the work programmed?

Work is split by elevation so entrances and fire exits stay usable. For schools, noisy and access-heavy stages are planned around holidays where possible. Health and safety duties under CDM 2015 are agreed at the start, including who acts as principal contractor.

Commercial EWI in Cambridge: questions

Can the building stay open during the works?

Usually, yes. The work is phased and the scaffold layout keeps entrances and escape routes clear.

Do you handle the planning application?

We provide the technical information, drawings and samples an application needs; your agent or our designer can submit it.

Is VAT 0% on commercial insulation?

Usually not. The zero rate covers insulation installed in residential accommodation and, since 1 February 2024, buildings used solely for a relevant charitable purpose, such as many charity-run village halls. Other commercial work is standard-rated.

Do you cover Cambridge?

Yes — we survey and quote commercial external wall insulation in Cambridge (CB1) and nearby Newmarket, Huntingdon and Haverhill, with a fixed written price before any work starts.
