Kidderminster: walls, weather and approvals
We also cover Stourport-on-Severn and Stourbridge, close to Kidderminster. Kidderminster sits around 14 miles from Worcester. The West Midlands has large numbers of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, inter-war semis and post-war council estates, including concrete and steel-framed house types.
Much of Worcestershire sits in the lower wind-driven rain exposure bands, which keeps the choice of finishes wide — though hilltop, coastal and exposed gable walls can still need a tougher specification, so we check the actual site.
Where eaves are shallow on a house in Kidderminster, grey EPS can sometimes avoid the cost of extending the roofline.

Planning and building control in England
Planning in Kidderminster follows England's national rules: similar-looking finishes on houses are usually permitted, while flats, commercial premises, conservation areas and streets under an Article 4 direction need an application.
If the work covers more than half of a wall, or a quarter of the building's whole envelope, it counts as renovating a thermal element, with a target of about 0.30 W/m²K where feasible.
What is EPS insulation?
Expanded polystyrene is a closed-cell foam made from beads that are expanded and moulded into boards. White EPS is the standard grade; grey EPS has graphite added, which reflects radiant heat and improves performance by roughly 15–20%, so a thinner board does the same job. Both are used inside certified render systems where the board, adhesive, fixings, mesh and finish are tested together by the manufacturer.

EPS insulation in Kidderminster: questions
Is EPS insulation safe on a house?
EPS is used inside render systems that are fire-tested as a whole. On low-rise houses it is widely used. On taller buildings, or where guidance calls for non-combustible materials, mineral wool systems are specified instead.
Will woodpeckers damage EPS?
It happens occasionally, especially near woodland. Damage is to the render and board surface and is repaired with a mesh patch and colour-matched finish.
How long does EPS last on a wall?
The board itself doesn't degrade when protected by the render system. Service life depends on the render, sealants and detailing, typically 25–30 years or more with maintenance.
