What the job covers

  • Used on blocks of flats and buildings with storeys above 11m
  • Vapour-open, so moisture in solid walls can dry outwards
  • Finished in mineral or silicone render, or brick slip
  • Non-combustible board (typically Euroclass A1 or A2-s1,d0 as part of the system)

Lincoln: walls, weather and approvals

As well as Lincoln itself, we quote in Gainsborough, Newark-on-Trent and Retford. Housing in the East Midlands includes Victorian terraces in the towns and cities, plenty of inter-war semis and post-war council estates, some of them system-built.

Much of Lincolnshire sits in the lower wind-driven rain exposure bands, which keeps the choice of finishes wide — though hilltop, coastal and exposed gable walls can still need a tougher specification, so we check the actual site.

Older solid-walled homes in Lincoln can suit a vapour-open mineral wool build-up better than foam; the survey checks the wall first.

Approvals in England

Planning in Lincoln follows England's national rules: similar-looking finishes on houses are usually permitted, while flats, commercial premises, conservation areas and streets under an Article 4 direction need an application.

Insulating or re-rendering more than half of a wall's area brings in Part L of the Building Regulations, so building control is notified and the wall is upgraded to about 0.30 W/m²K where practical.

On residential buildings with a storey 11 metres or more above ground, guidance points to non-combustible external wall materials, and combustible materials are banned in relevant buildings 18 metres and over, so we specify mineral wool systems there.

Is mineral wool required on my building?

For most two-storey houses it's a choice rather than a requirement. In England, regulation 7(2) bans combustible materials in the external walls of 'relevant buildings' 18 metres and over, and the Approved Document B guidance also covers residential buildings with a storey at 11 metres or more. Wales has its own amended rules, and Scotland restricts combustible cladding on buildings with a storey more than 11 metres above ground. We specify mineral wool wherever these apply and confirm the system's fire classification in writing.

Mineral wool EWI in Lincoln: questions

Is mineral wool better than EPS?

Not always better — different. Mineral wool wins on fire performance, breathability and acoustics; EPS wins on cost, weight and thinner boards for the same U-value. The wall, the building height and your priorities decide it.

Is mineral wool needed for a bungalow?

Rarely for fire reasons. It may still be chosen on a damp-prone solid wall where a vapour-open build-up is wanted.

Can mineral wool EWI have a brick finish?

Yes. Brick slips can be bonded over mineral wool systems designed for them, with additional fixings for the extra weight.

Do you cover Lincoln?

Yes — we survey and quote mineral wool external wall insulation in Lincoln (LN2) and nearby Gainsborough, Newark-on-Trent and Retford, with a fixed written price before any work starts.
